Canada sees 94,000 more jobs in July

Canada added 94,000 jobs in July compared to June for a total of nearly 18.9 million, Statistics Canada reported today. July’s increase follows a jump of 231,000 jobs in June. Meanwhile, Canada’s unemployment rate fell to 7.5% in July from 7.8% in June. However, Reuters reported the job numbers were less than expected; analysts were looking for 177,500 jobs.

All of July’s employment gains occurred in the private sector, which added 122,700 jobs. Public-sector employment fell by 30,500.

The lion’s share of the gains in July were in full-time employment, which rose by 83,000 jobs. Part-time employment rose by 11,000.

Looking at just Ontario, the province added 72,400 jobs in July, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.0% in July from 8.4% in June.
