US adds nearly 2.4 million private-sector jobs in June with strong growth in leisure and hospitality: ADP Research Institute

Private-sector employment in the US rose by nearly 2.4 million jobs in June compared to the previous month, according to the ADP National Employment Report released today.

“As the economy slowly continues to recover, we are seeing a significant rebound in industries that once experienced the greatest job losses,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, VP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute. “In fact, 70% of the jobs added this month were in the leisure and hospitality, trade and construction industries.”

The June gain is smaller than the nearly 3.1 million added in May. However, the US lost approximately 19.4 million jobs in April and 302,000 jobs in March as the impact of Covid-19 hit.

Looking at June, small businesses added 937,000 jobs while midsize businesses added 559,000. Large businesses added 873,000.

Here are the ADP Research Institute’s estimates of jobs gains/losses by industry during June:

  • Goods-producing, up 457,000
    • Natural resources/mining, down 26,000
    • Construction, up 394,000
    • Manufacturing, up 88,000
  • Service-providing, up 1.9 million
    • Trade/transportation/utilities, up 288,000
    • Information, down 50,000
    • Financial activities, up 65,000
    • Professional/business services, up 151,000
      • Professional/technical services, up 10,000
      • Management of companies/enterprises, down 29,000
      • Administrative/support services, up 169,000
    • Education/health services, up 283,000
      • Healthcare/social assistance, up 246,000
      • Education, up 36,000
    • Leisure/hospitality, up 961,000
    • Other services, up 215,000
