US staffing companies employed an average of 2.7 million temporary and contract workers per week in the first quarter of this year, a year-over-year increase of 1.6%, the American Staffing Association reported today.

It noted staffing employment typically peaks in the fourth quarter because of holiday hiring. Staffing employment declines in the first quarter but grows in subsequent quarters. Staffing jobs contracted by 6.7%, or 197,000 jobs, when comparing the first quarter of 2022 to the fourth quarter of 2021.

“The staffing and recruiting industry continues to support job creation and economic growth,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and CEO. “In this challenging hiring climate, staffing companies are crucial players in providing flexibility and meeting the labor demands of companies looking to fill their full-time and flexible talent benches.”
