US jobless claims rise by 21,000, now at highest level since Christmas

US initial jobless claims rose by 21,000 in the week ended March 4 to a total of 211,000, the US Department of Labor reported today.

MarketWatch reported it is the first time in eight weeks that claims have topped 200,000, but most of the increase was in New York.

Meanwhile, the four-week moving average of initial claims rose by 4,000 to a level of 197,000.
